Focus Group - Medicines Waste Campaign

Jackie McCallum, Improvement Adviser, NHS Tayside and Frances Rooney, Head of Pharmacy, Perth and Kinross CHP, NHS Tayside, would like to invite members of the public to a focus group. This will be held on Thursday 28 July 2011 at 2.00pm within Kings Cross.

Both Jackie and Frances are part of the Medicines Leadership Project Team and are currently planning a Medicines Waste campaign. They would very much like to involve the public in the planning and development of resources for the campaign.

Unused medicines cost the NHS millions of pounds every year. Around £100 million in wasted medicine is returned to pharmacies for safe disposal annually. The annual budget for prescribed medicines in NHS Tayside is £100 million and medicines waste or unused medicines currently accounts for around 10% of this. Reducing medicines waste cuts across the whole of the prescribing improvement project which aims to improve the quality of prescribing and reduce variation and harm in the use of medicines. A reduction in medicines will also contribute to improving patient safety and reducing harm.

The purpose of the focus group is to gather public’s views on the campaign and draft resources, such as public information leaflets and posters. It will also be an opportunity for members of the public to find out more about the campaign and also give views on how the campaign can be promoted and how best to get the key messages across to the wider public.

Target Audience of the Campaign

· Patients, especially those on repeat prescriptions and who, for a variety of reasons, order some medicines they actually never use or complete
· Healthcare professionals including doctors, pharmacists and hospital staff who interact with patients on a daily basis
· Carers and care workers who look after people who can’t collect their own medicines

Key messages of the campaign particularly target carers and care workers to get them to stop and think about what they are ordering on behalf of someone and checking what the person they care for does have in stock.

We would welcome carers' views on how to help promote the key campaign messages to carers as well as the wider patient population.

Recovery Cafe Event

The Dundee Alcohol and Drug Partnership is committed to developing services that are recovery focused. To do this, there needs to be a shared understanding of, and commitment to recovery. Family members, professionals and community members all have a role to play in supporting recovery.

To try and develop this shared understanding about recovery, Dundee ADP has decided to hold a Recovery Café Event to bring together people in recovery, professionals, family members and community members to discuss and share their ideas on recovery.

• A Café event is a particular way of seeking views and allowing discussion on a particular topic.

• This event will allow for a discussion about Recovery from substance misuse.

• The event is set up in a café style; with about 8 tables where people can sit and discuss the 3 questions they will be asked, writing key ideas/points in post it notes to stick to the table.

• There are no right or wrong answers to the questions. The aim is to get people talking.

• The 3 questions will focus on recovery – what this means to individuals and what others can do to help.

• People will only be asked to give their first name and do not have to say where they are from.

• After each question, all participants, except one, are asked to move to a different table to discuss the next question.

• At the end of the event, participants are asked to put their key thoughts or commitments on a post it to share with others.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

My name is Pamela Munro and I am the information Officer for Scotland for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

I am trying to get as much information out to the general public as possible about Guide Dogs and the services that we provide.

There are many people out there who do not realise that they may be able to apply for a guide dog.

You do not need to have lost all of your sight to apply for a guide dog, neither do you need to be registered as blind or partially sighted.

Costs can be something that they also question. For a person who is accepted as a guide dog owner it costs them 50p. We pay for all the training, and equipment and we can pay for vet bills and food bills if needed.

The fact that we work in different communities, work with clients who have additional disabilities, means that we treat each person as an individual.

Would you have a newsletter where I could get an article or an information point where information could be displayed for peoples use.

Also is there an opportunity to come and talk to your service users and staff

A local charity, Starter Packs Dundee, is in need of your help. They donate household goods, cleaning materials and toiletries to homeless families who are in the process of taking on a first tenancy. Demand has been so overwhelming recently that they are running very low on supplies.

Digital Photography Training Course

In March, we ran our first Introduction to Digital Photography training course which was a huge success. Those who took part learned more about their cameras, became familiar with recognised techniques for taking good photographs, were shown different ways of getting their images onto their computers or printed, learned how to improve their pictures by making changes to them using everyday software and, most importantly, gained more confidence in getting out there with their cameras and being snap-happy!

Telephone Counselling for Young Carers & Disabled - Scoping Study

Free Workshops for Unpaid Carers and People with Long Term Conditions.

Shared Care Scotland is embarking on a Scotland-wide programme of local Inspiring Breaks workshops to support individuals with support needs and unpaid carers to be more actively involved in shaping the short break and respite care services they receive, so that they are better able to meet their needs. What’s involved?

Their aim is to deliver a programme that helps people to: Learn from other people’s experience of funding, sourcing and arranging short breaks and respite care; Find out about the different ways that short breaks can be supported; Learn a new approach to planning short breaks that helps you to achieve the outcomes you want; Make new contacts and build networks with people and organisations who can work together with you; Have a fun, informative and inspirational day that opens the door to new possibilities! The Inspiring Breaks programme has been designed and will be co-delivered by people with long term conditions and carers; people with experience of short breaks. They will be working alongside our programme facilitators.

Why do we need Inspiring Breaks? With increasing pressure on public finances it is essential that we work together to ensure all the available resources are used to achieve the best possible outcomes. As well as helping people make the most of existing breaks, we will use the workshops to explore alternative ways that people can be supported, and look at ways that we can mobilise wider community resources for short break purposes. Empowering people to create opportunities to be more involved in local decisions about short break planning will also be a key feature of the programme, giving them a stronger say in the future direction of services in their local area.

Tayside Police Warning Over Bogus Callers

Tayside Police have urged residents to be on their guard against cold callers and bogus workmen who arrive unannounced at their door and offer services such as building work and repairs, gardening work, the removal of rubbish, or general tidying up.

People looking to persuade residents into engaging their supposed services often adopt high-pressure sales techniques and are well-practiced in their patter. They can be very convincing to whoever answers the door to them and difficult to send on their way.

Very often it is the home addresses of the elderly and more vulnerable members of the community that they call on.

Every year, Tayside Police receives complaints from householders who have been left out-of-pocket due to so-called workmen who vanished, leaving jobs half-done, or badly finished, typically having received a large cash sum in advance.

With no contact details, contract, invoice or business card, the victim has no way of tracing the workmen or so-called company.

There are also bogus callers who knock at a door - claiming to represent a company or authority - with the sole intention of conning their way in, distracting the householder and stealing from them.

In urging householders to be vigilant and neighbours to look out for one another, Tayside Police offer the following advice: –

• Be suspicious of anyone arriving unannounced at your door. Householders should ensure that doors are secure, even when at home and use a door chain.
• Neighbours should look out for one another – particularly if they have elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Report any suspicious activity to the police.
• Do not allow casual callers to undertake work on your property – such as roofing repairs, re-surfacing of driveways, or gardening.
• If someone calls at your door offering to carry out work, satisfy yourself that the person, or the company they claim to represent, is reputable. Take a contact telephone number and then take time to check out their credentials. Tell them you will call them back if you want the work done.
• Bogus workmen have practiced their sales patter with a view to sealing an instant deal. Do not accept or consent to have work done immediately. Take time to speak with friends, family, or neighbours, as well consumer advice organisations, or the Police about what the workman offered.
• Never bow to pressure to pay for a job in advance no matter how demanding the workman or caller is. Do not allow callers to persuade you into letting them in to your home, or to taking you to a bank or cash machine so you can withdraw cash for them.
• Ask for a written quote on headed paper. Ask where they advertise, or if they are listed in the phone book. Seek out references.
• It is good practice for anyone requiring any type of building or gardening work to be done to obtain a number of written quotes from trustworthy and established firms, before deciding. People should not simply contact a company in response to a flier that came arrives via the letter box.
• Fliers are simple to create and the chances are that if they carry an offer that appears to good to be true, it is too good to be true.

Consumer Direct have links with Trading Standards Unit. The Scottish Scambusters Team who cover the whole of Scotland is a specialist Trading Standards Unit set up to tackle rogue traders and would be interested in any information the public might have. As well as the Consumer direct telephone number, information can also be sent in confidence to Scambusters@northlan.gsx.gov.uk.

Anyone who has information regarding bogus workmen can contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222. Details such as vehicle registration numbers and descriptions of the individuals involved are invaluable. People can also call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Carers Choir

The Carers Choir had its initial meeting recently (Feb 9) with a small but select group of singers. If you, or someone you care for is interested in getting involved in singing as part of a choir, the next rehearsal will take place on Monday 28 February at 6.30pm.

Don’t worry that you missed the first session as the choir is only doing 2 songs and the emphasis is on everybody enjoying themselves! You don’t need to be able to read music, and don’t feel that you need to be of a certain standard to take part, and, of course, don’t forget that singing is a great stress buster!

RADAR key for Disabled Toilets

The RADAR key is a scheme which allows disabled people to access more than 7,000 public toilets which are usually kept locked. The key can be used throughout the country, for example at train stations, shopping centres, etc. Once you have your key you won't have to wait about to use the facilities or spend time searching for the keyholder.

Why we need your help:
The Government plans to replace Disability Living Allowance with a new Personal Independence Payment, with a new application process including 'independent medical assessment'. In addition, the Government plans to cut £1 billion from the Disability Living Allowance budget, which could lead to hundreds of thousands of disabled people seeing their benefits reduced or removed. Carers UK is deeply concerned that the knock-on impacts on carers have not been considered and we are also worried that the future of Carer's Allowance remains unclear.

The Government's consultation on the DLA proposals closes on Monday 14 February and we need to make sure that carers voices are heard loud and clear. We will submit a full response to the consultation making it very clear to the Government what carers need, but our response will only be counted once and we need lots of carers and carers groups to respond as well.

Survey amongst people aged 60+ who provide unpaid care

Our colleagues at the Princess Royal Trust for Carers are carrying out a survey amongst people aged 60+ who provide unpaid care for a friend or family member anywhere in the UK.

The survey is designed to enable them to learn more about older carers’ experiences, and help them to develop solutions which will improve support for older carers and their families. They are interested in all aspects of carers’ experiences, and particularly in carers’ own health needs.

If you are an older carer please complete the survey online, or download and print the PRTC survey 2011 and return it to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers at the address given on the questionnaire by 31 March 2011.

If you know of any older carers or local carers groups we’d be very grateful if you’d pass this on to them.

There are more people affected by Multiple Sclerosis in Scotland than anywhere else in the world. MS is unpredictable with a wide range of symptoms and this presents a unique challenge to care staff working with people affected by MS.

There are many treatments which aim to improve the symptoms and make them easier to live with. It is these treatments along with other symptom-management techniques that participants will explore throughout the day.

Opportunties for carers to get involved in the run up to the Scottish election in May 2011

The Centre has a couple of great opportunities coming up for carers to get involved at a national level.

The first is a Hustings Question Time event on 21st March. This will be similar to a Question Time for Carers and will allow us to challenge each of the main political parties in Scotland about their commitments to carers, in the run up to the Scottish elections in May 2011.

The panel is confirmed as:

Jackie Baillie MSP, Party Spokesperson on Health, Scottish Labour Party
Ross Finnie MSP, Party Spokesperson on Health, Scottish Liberal Democrat Party

It will be chaired by Professor George Irving CBE

We will be get further information in the next few weeks. In the meantime please Tim Mineard, Deputy Manager at the Centre know if you are interested. We're hoping to go down and maybe take a minibus if we’re given enough spaces.

The second opportunity is a trip to the Scottish Parliament to take part in a Cross Party Group of MSPs on Thursday 3rd February. Again, this is an opportunity for carers to ask questions either about their own circumstances or more generally about carers needs and issues in general. We already have a few carers coming to this, but there are still some spaces. I’ll be taking a minibus also , so again contact Tim if you are interested in going along.

Carers Counselling Service

The Dundee Carers Centre is trialling a counselling service for carers from January 2011. The service will only be available on a limited basis at first but will hopefully expand in the near future.

What is counselling?
Counselling is not for everyone, but it can be a really useful option if you are feeling completely overwhelmed or stuck and need a fresh sense of perspective. The main benefit of counselling is that it gives you a safe space set apart from everyday life to talk things through with someone who is removed from the issues.

Counselling is not a magic solution – but it can help you to gain a deeper understanding of what you are going through and hopefully make a positive difference to your life and to the lives of those around you.

Who is the service for?
The service is for any carer aged 16 and over who feels that they would benefit from some counselling sessions.

How do I get counselling?
If you are interested and feel you would like to come along for an initial appointment, please contact Tim at the office on 200422 or e-mail tim.mineard@dundeecarerscentre.org.uk. You could also speak to your Support Worker about making a referral.

Because the service is being run on a trial basis, there are a very limited number of sessions at the moment so you may have to wait. If you would prefer not to wait, we can always suggest some other options for accessing counselling in the meantime.

Open Doors is an employability project offering the basic skills and experiences you need to move into a job or career in the hospitality sector. It is open to people aged 16 or over, who are unemployed and live in the Dundee area.

The 4 week course covers all the basic skills needed to start your journey into finding employment in the hospitality and catering sector. Looking at both the theory and practical aspects needed in gaining experience in hospitality and catering, experienced staff are on hand to help you achieve your goal. They have a fully equipped training kitchen in which you will gain hands-on experience of working within a catering environment.

Enquire is the national advice and information service for additional support for learning. They've recently re-launched their website with a new format and new features as well as practical advice and information for parents, carers and practitioners working with children and young people with additional support needs.

The Carers Cafes are an opportunity for carers and workers to sit down in a cafe-ftyle conversation about how carers can have more of a voice in Dundee.

There are 2 Cafes and both will take place at the Central Baptist Church Hall, Ward Road, Dundee at the following times:

Friday 15 October, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Monday 18 October, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Both of the Cafes will pose a few simple questions about the way forward for improving carers participation in Dundee. Each Cafe will follow the same format so you only need to come to one. The Cafes are open to carers of all ages and with all types of caring roles and experiences. We'd love to see you there!

• Provide a preview of ‘Coping with Dementia – a practical DVD for carers’
• Reinforce the importance of supporting carers of people with dementia
• Bring together carers of people with dementia, partners working in field of dementia and those involved in the development of the DVD to provide a forum for discussion, networking and shared learning

About the DVD

Produced by NHS Health Scotland in partnership with Alzheimer Scotland, ‘Coping with dementia’ is for people caring for someone in the middle to late stages of dementia.

The DVD is based on the experiences of carers of people with dementia and uses carers’ voices to:

• Give practical advice on coping with caring for someone with dementia
• Share experience about what helps to cope with caring
• Suggest where to go for help and more information

The DVD can be viewed in English (with or without subtitles), British Sign Language, Polish, Cantonese, Sylheti or in formal versions of Hindi and Punjabi. ‘Coping with dementia’ is part of a suite of resources available from NHS Health Scotland and Alzheimer Scotland for people with dementia and their carers.

If not, it stands for Carers Are Really, Really Out There and it's the Young Carers Project's weekly group for 8-12 year olds who help care for a family member who is ill, disabled, or has mental health or addiction issues.

Festival of Politics

The Festival of Politics takes place on 19 August in the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh. This event will give young people the chance to have their stories heard by politicians. This year, there will a an event for young carers to share their experiences, hopes and dreams.

100,000 children and young people in Scotland provide care and support to family members and others who are ill, disabled or caught up in substance misuse. Caring can be hugely positive, but it can take over life at the expense of normal childhood experiences.

The event will be hosted by Cathie Peattie MSP and Louise Morgan of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

'150 Mile Ball' - Walkers Wanted!

A '150 Mile Ball' event is being organised by the East Ayrshire Carers Centre.

The event is being held to launch Carlogie House, East Ayrshire's new respite and conference famility in Carnoustie. It is taking the form of a 150 mile sponsored walk (from the East Ayrshire Centre to Carlogie House), a Charity Ball and a Fun Day. The Ball and Fun Day are taking place on Saturday 4th September, along with the last leg of the walk.

Dundee Carers Centre is putting together a team to do the last part from Dundee to Carnoustie - approx 10 miles. It's also an opportunity to raise money for the Centre through sponsor forms.

Carers UK’s manifesto campaign is two-fold:
Firstly, it aims to ensure that carers’ voices are clearly heard. To this end Carers UK has set up a website where carers can upload pictures of themselves holding their messages for government.
